The Waffle Jam is an annual BMX jam hosted by Vans South Africa in the Mother City of Cape Town. This years jam gave collaboration a whole new meaning with a large amount of DIY. The project was led by Vans team rider Brandon Blight, who saw potential in a newly repurposed high school swimming pool as the venue for this years event. Over the years the pool has lost its structural integrity, leaving it unsafe as a swimming pool. Local SA skate legend Dallas Oberholzer has worked closely with the principal of the school, turning the pool into a skatepark over the last few years, with the goal of turning the pool into a unique skatepark, this was the perfect opportunity for the BMX riders to get involved and help get the pool closer to the dream DIY setup.

With Winter season being just a few weeks away, we didn’t have much time to get building. The Vans ZA Team with the help of a few homies pulled in early to help setup and build wooden ramps, with Dallas and his team handling all the crazy trannies in the shallow side. We managed to get everything done just days before the jam. Luck was on our side and Cape Town showed us the beauty of a warm windless day in the Mother City.

A huge thank you to everyone that picked up a spade, bucket and drill. Huge thank you to Vans South Africa and Redbull South Africa for the support. See you all at Waffle Jam 3. —Brandon Blight
