7 Random Observations from the Backyard Jam in Derby



Hotel Destruction:

 While someone tried to set the elevator on fire end
ended up suckerpunching the hotel manager the year before, this year's
destruction was confined to some carpets and curtains leaving a room
through the window. The only one being suckerpunched was Peter Adam but
that, to quote Pete, "was probably for a good enough reason"

The renaissance of pegs:

 This year the sign at the door saying "please
leave your pegs at the entrance and keep the stripey t-shirt visible at
all times" was removed so you could actually see some people sporting
lovely axle extentions again. But don't be fooled, Garrett still has a
lot to answer for at these comps.

Jamie Bestwick:

 It was weird seeing someone ride a contest that you
knew could shut down the whole thing with just one serious approach to
the 10ft quarter – but doesn't. He rode good enough without it.

Drunk Judges:

 Despite some of the judges having a few beer and openly
harrassing riders whose turndowns weren't up to par the results turned
out okay.

John Heaton, Flip to something:

 Would a Backyard Jam (or any contest
for that matter) be the same without 4200 flip to something attempts by
John Heaton? Thought so! This Flip to Tailtap on the slanted subbox was
pulled eventually.

Rooftop:

 isn't really known for the best contests runs but managed to
launch himself through the arena pretty good this time and ended the
best trick contest 30 minutes after the time was over with a wild 50/50
on the wallride.

Contest Storys:

 Have never been my cup of tea but with some messenger
pressure and a couple of month to think about, there is a slight chance
that something is gonna dribbe out of my brain. Go visit one of these
jams yourself.
